Paperwork and check in

If you already mailed in your Health history, permission slip & photo release, thanks!  At the first session, you can go to EXPRESS CHECK IN  to pick up your patches & books.
If you are bringing your forms - Health History, Permission slip & photo release on the first day,  please read the following troop check in procedure.

Troop CHECK IN PROCEDURES
I bring in one troop at a time to check in. To make the process faster, please wait outside until your entire troop arrives. Put the girl’s papers in alphabetical order by the girl’s first name, I will call you in when I am ready for your troop.  Don’t staple the three forms together.
Download required paperwork  Please make sure that you make sure that you can open them before the first day, so that you can contact me early if there is a problem.  (Please don't call me at midnight the night before the journey with paperwork questions ---and yes that has happened!)
The password to the password protected REQUIRED PAPERWORK page was emailed to you or your leader. If you don't have the password, please check your email, contact your leader or contact me   http://www.workshops4girls.com/required-paperwork.html
REQUIRED PAPERWORK To the first session please bring:
  1. Completed Health History form (copies are OK) make sure to sign at the bottom.
  2. Permission slip for the Anaheim Program Center Make sure your daughter’s troop number and name are on the permission form & that it is signed.
  3. Photo Release form.
IMPORTANT It is required that each girl provide the listed Permission Slips and Health History form.  If the appropriate paperwork is not turned in, the girl will not be permitted to stay.

Checklist of additional items to  bring or complete at home before each day

ALL SESSIONS
  •   Journey book (If you purchased one from the instructor, it will be provided to you the first session).
  •   Water bottle WITH NAME ON IT
  •   A small backpack or bag with name on it to store your book, water bottle etc. when they are not in use.
  •   Any activities you were asked to complete, if applicable.
Session # 2

  • Camera –  The girls will be using cameras to do some filming.  (cell phone cameras are fine).  They will be working in small groups, one camera per group, so if each girl doesn’t have one that is OK. The GIRLS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM.  We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items.
  • Activity on Page 27 “Day of Message Overload” There is a full description in the book, but basically it consists of keeping track of all the media/ads you see in 24 hours (or time period of their choice), paying attention to the amount, where you see it, what is being sold, how it is being sold.  Bring their findings to session 2.  (It doesn’t have to be in writing).  We will be asking questions and discussing what they observed..
  • Glance over pages 1 – 30 (We covered  lots the first day )  Make special note of page  28 – “Getting Hooked”
  • Read pages  42-46 about stereotypes   Completing Page 46 “Stereotype Search” is  optional.
Session # 3

  •         1 completed survey -  info provided at session
  •         Read pages 74 – 80 Take Action Project Overview

Session # 4

  • They should read page 91 & complete page 95..
  • Prepare 15 second description - Each girl will give me or one of the helper adults (not the whole group – no stress !!)  a brief “15 second” description of their project.  I call it their “elevator speech”. Everything you could say to someone you met in an elevator ride. Have them practice with you.    It should include  what they are doing,  why they are doing it, a few of the specific details,  their goals.
  • Their copy of their written project plan (if they took it home)
  • Any items they need for their project

WHAT TO WEAR -
In summer, sandals are OK, but no flip flops.  The girls can wear their sash or vest if they would like to.  Uniform not required.

SNACKS   We are very busy & have a very short snack time. We will be providing a light snack, fruit & crackers or cheese & crackers, please make sure the girls eat breakfast before the workshop.
PICKUP - DROP OFF  Please arrive & pickup on time.
Please escort your troop or daughter into the building each session. You may need to stay until adult child/ratios are met.  Pick them up by coming to the patio area. For their safety, we will not release girls to walk out to a car unless we can see the parent/leader.  Do not ask them to wait for you in front of the building.  After the session we will be cleaning up and can’t supervise the girls if they are out front.
FINAL SESSION SAVE THE DATE – At our last session, August 14  , a troop leader or RA (or parent, if troop leader is not attending sessions) from each troop is required to attend the last half hour from 1130 - 12 to meet with the girls to hear their journey Take Action Project completion plan. In the case of one representative coming for a whole troop, I recommend that it is someone who works with the girls and is qualified to help evaluate their project.   I want to be sure that that you clearly understand the girl’s project and each girl’s responsibilities within it before you leave the sessions.   Guidance on evaluating projects can be found on the pages under the TAKE ACTION PROJECTS page of this site.  It can be helpful to read them  before you arrive, I will also be giving them to you that day as handou
ts.

ANY QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS
If you have scheduling issues or personal concerns that you need to discuss with me, please email or text me prior to our session or ask me at 12PM as I clean up.

Day 4 - Final Session - Leader talk & Take Action Project follow up resources

On day 3, the girls will choose their Take Action Project issue, form groups and start their planning process. Each group (or individual for solo projects) is given a project planning sheet to use to describe their project. If you would like to view it or the girls need a new one, download at this link.

http://www.workshops4girls.com/media-take-action-project-planning-sheet.html

What the girls can expect this session
The girls will work on finalizing their written plan.  Once they are ready, I will “interview” the girls verbally,  review their written Take Action Project plan &  give their plan a green light (ready to start) yellow light (needs more detail)  or red light  (start over – haven’t ever had to do that !).  The goal is to have all plans earn a green light by the end of the day.  There will be crafts for girls to work on as well.

 LEADER/PARENT TIPS FOR DAY 4
After out journey ends, you (the troop leader or parent) are in charge of monitoring the girls’ project completion.
Please ask the girls about their project and their written plan.  They have the hard copy.  (In the case of groups, it was sent home with one of the girls.) Discussing it with an adult helps them firm up their plan prior to the last session.  The girl's MEdia book has helpful tips for guiding the girls' projects.  Look at page 74 - 75 for project examples.  Page 76 -80 for help in reaching their target audience. More resources from my website  listed below
LEADER/PARENT TALK Please arrive by 11:30.(Unless asked to come earlier. See below)
I want to be sure that that you clearly understand the girl’s project and each girl’s responsibilities within it before you leave the sessions.  Therefore a troop leader or parent from each troop is required to attend the last half hour from 11:30 - 12 to learn about project follow up & meet with the girls to review & evaluate their project. Any leader or parent who feels that you would like more help in learning how to guide girls through project planning, you are welcome to come earlier (during the first half) & observe how I evaluate the girl’s plans.

Topics covered
How to follow up on the Take Action Project
How the Journey Take Action Project prepares them for the Silver Award
Badge Tie ins
Scope of projects
Troubleshooting
Personal responsibility
Inspirational projects

GIRLS ATTENDING AS SMALL TROOP (less than 6) In the case of one representative coming for a whole troop, I recommend that it is someone who works with the girls and is qualified to help evaluate their project.

GIRLS ATTENDING AS INDIVIDUALS OR WITHOUT LEADER
If your daughter is in a troop but attending alone, it is her responsibility to give a copy of her plan to her troop leader to monitor follow up.  An adult who can help the girl convey the information to the leader should attend.  If you have questions or concerns about this please email me.

ALL TROOP ADULTS ARE AT WORK AND CAN"T ATTEND LAST SESSION
- Please inform me ahead of time.  I will send paperwork home with carpool parent.  The leader can email me after the session if they have questions about follow up.

GIRLS ATTENDING WITH A large troop (more than 6 girls)
The leader meeting with the girls is 10 minutes of the leader talk. That is a sufficient amount of time to evaluate a single plan. Since you have a large group & they are split into multiple projects, you will obviously need more time.  The best way to do this is to have your troop leaders attend the first hour or so to assist the girls in getting ready to “interview’ with me.  Once they are in good shape, if my adult ratios are met, you can take a break and come back to the informational talk at 11:30 with the rest of the leaders or hang out for the rest of the day.

Journey Take Action Project & Award Patches - Monitor, Influence, Cultivate

The MEdia Journey is complete when they earn their Monitor, Influence and Cultivate awards.  Some components of the awards are earned during the sessions, but other steps involve completing a Journey Take Action Project (for this journey it is named the MEdia Remake Project).  A Take Action Project addresses an issue in the community and works towards a solution by addressing the root cause, since this must be done outside of the workshops to reach the community it has to be completed after the sessions.
The patch set will be given to the leader/parent at sign in session # 1. They are to be awarded to the girls when the steps below are complete.
If girls attend all sessions, this is the progress they will have made towards completing the Awards.

Monitor Award – To earn this award, the girls "monitor" media & explore how they use it, as well as how media affects their community. This award will be complete. (Described on page 92 of the girl's MEdia book)
Influence Award –  The Influence  Award contains most of the steps of the MEdia Remake Project.  The girls will identify some form of MEdia that they think needs to change & they remake it.  Once they remake it, they advocate for it & share what they learned to educate and inspire their chosen target audience.  Example projects can be found in the girls MEdia book on page 74. The Influence award is described on page 94 of the girl's MEdia book.
They will have earned the portions of this award that involve:
Identifying their media issue.
Choosing their MEdia Remake Take Action Project.
Forming a team or choosing to work alone.
Identifying what their talents are and how they will contribute to the project.
Setting their goals for the impact they want their project to make.
In order to earn the rest, after the last session they will still need to:

Implement their project.
Reflect on their projects impact  making note of what they may have done to improve it .

Cultivate – This award is earned by following up on their personal media commitment (Described on page 91 & 95 of the girl's MEdia book)
