Click here for Journey Take Action Project & Award info - Monitor, Influence, Cultivate award
Session # 2 TUESDAY
1. Finished activity page 27 of their book (described below)
2. One or two magazines that THEY read.  We will not be cutting them up.     They will take them home.
3. Camera –
The girls will be using cameras to do some filming.  (cell phone cameras are fine).  They will be working in small groups, one camera per group, so if each girl doesn’t have
one that is OK. The GIRLS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM.  We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items.

“Day of Message Overload” activity on Page 27.
There is a full description in the book, but basically it consists of keeping track of all the media/ads you see in 24 hours (or time period of their choice), paying attention to the amount, where you see it, what is being sold, how it is being sold.  Bring their findings to session 2.  (It doesn’t have to be in writing).  We will be asking questions and discussing what they observed..
Additional Activities to complete before session # 2.
1)   Glance over pages 1 – 30 (We covered  lots the first day )
2)    Make special note of page  28 – “Getting Hooked”
3)    Day of Message Overload activity on Page 27 See above
4)    Read pages  42-46 about stereotypes   Completing Page 46 “Stereotype Search” is  optional.

REQUEST FOR HELP – first half hour – I would like to invite adults/family members to stay to be surveyed by the girls will be giving a survey about media issues  between 9 – 9:30.
Session # 3 WEDNESDAY
The girls should read pages 72 – 80 Take Action Project Overview. Fill out page 76
The Take Action Project of the MEdia journey involves remaking some type of MEdia that the girl’s don’t like & remaking it to how they think it should be.  After they create their Remake, they spread their message.  These pages describe example projects as well as ways to choose a project & their audience.
What’s happening this session?
The girls will choose the issue/topic for their MEdia Take Action Project. They will form their Take Action Project groups & begin the preliminary work on their plan.

Take Action Project follow up (Final session)

Session # 4 THURSDAY
Things the girls need to before the final session
  • Read pages 90- 96
  • Fill out page 94   - all but last two questions
  • Complete the Take Action Project planning Sheet.  If someone else took it home, make notes on page 94 & add to the group planning sheet when they arrive at the next session.
  • Fill out pages  90 -91 & 95 to be shared at closing ceremony
  • Write & practice their 15 second “elevator speech”   describing project & goals. Use the prompts I gave them (see below *) or use book - page 94. - Each girl will give me or one of the helper adults (not the whole group – no stress !!)  a brief “15 second” description of their project.  I call it their “elevator speech”. Everything you could say to someone you met in an elevator ride. Have them practice with you.  It should include what they are doing, why they are doing it, a few of the specific details & what their goals are.
Items to bring
  • Their copy of their written project plan - if they brought it home.
  • Any items they needed for their project.  They can bring laptops or phones for research.
                                                  * 15 – 30 second “elevator speech”
Your “speech” should answer the following question.
What are you doing for your Journey Take Action Project?
You can use these prompts or write your own!

Progress so far
At the third session , the girls chose their Take Action Project issue, formed groups and started their planning process. Each group (or individual for solo projects) was given a project planning sheet to use to describe their project. If you would like to view it or the girls need a new one, download at this link.
http://www.workshops4girls.com/media-take-action-project-planning-sheet.html
On this page you will also find a leader guide with sample answers.

What the girls can expect this session
The girls will work on finalizing their written plan.  Once they are ready, I will review their written Take Action Project plan &  give their plan a green light (ready to start) yellow light (needs more detail)  or red light  (start over – haven’t ever had to do that !).  The goal is to have all plans earn a green light by the end of the day, if possible.  If they girls need more time, they can email me their plan after our session.  There will be crafts for girls to work on as well.

LEADER/PARENT TIPS FOR DAY 4
After Session 4, you (the troop leader or parent) are in charge of monitoring the girls’ project completion.
Please ask the girls about their project and their written plan.  They have the hard copy.  (In the case of groups, it was sent home with one of the girls.) Discussing it with an adult helps them firm up their plan prior to the last session.  The girl's MEdia book has helpful tips for guiding the girls' projects.  Look at page 74 - 75 for project examples.  Page 76 -80 for help in reaching their target audience. More resources from my website  listed below

LEADER/PARENT TALK Please arrive by 11:30.

To ensure that you clearly understand the girl’s project and each girls’ responsibilities within it before you leave the sessions, a troop leader or parent from each troop is required to attend the last half hour from 11:30 -12 to learn about project follow up.
Topics covered
How to follow up on the Take Action Project
How the Journey Take Action Project prepares them for the Silver Award
Badge Tie ins
Scope of projects
Troubleshooting
Personal responsibility

GIRLS ATTENDING AS SMALL TROOP (less than 6) In the case of one representative coming for a whole troop, I recommend that it is someone who works with the girls and is qualified to help evaluate their project.

GIRLS ATTENDING AS INDIVIDUALS OR WITHOUT LEADER
If your daughter is in a troop but attending alone, it is her responsibility to give a copy of her plan to her troop leader to monitor follow up.  An adult who can help the girl convey the information to the leader should attend.  If you have questions or concerns about this please email me.

Silver Award

Journey Take Action Project & Award Patches - Monitor, Influence, Cultivate

The MEdia Journey is complete when they earn their Monitor, Influence and Cultivate awards.  Some components of the awards are earned during the sessions, but other steps involve completing a Journey Take Action Project (for this journey it is named the MEdia Remake Project).  A Take Action Project addresses an issue in the community and works towards a solution by addressing the root cause, since this must be done outside of the workshops to reach the community it has to be completed after the sessions.
The patch set will be given to the leader/parent at sign in session # 1. They are to be awarded to the girls when the steps below are complete.
If girls attend all sessions, this is the progress they will have made towards completing the Awards.

Monitor Award – To earn this award, the girls "monitor" media & explore how they use it, as well as how media affects their community. This award will be complete. (Described on page 92 of the girl's MEdia book)
Influence Award –  The Influence  Award contains most of the steps of the MEdia Remake Project.  The girls will identify some form of MEdia that they think needs to change & they remake it.  Once they remake it, they advocate for it & share what they learned to educate and inspire their chosen target audience.  Example projects can be found in the girls MEdia book on page 74. The Influence award is described on page 94 of the girl's MEdia book.
They will have earned the portions of this award that involve:
  • Identifying their media issue.
  • Choosing their MEdia Remake Take Action Project.
  • Forming a team or choosing to work alone.
  • Identifying what their talents are and how they will contribute to the project.
  • Setting their goals for the impact they want their project to make.
In order to earn the rest, after the last session they will still need to:
  • Implement their project.
  • Reflect on their projects impact  making note of what they may have done to improve it .
Cultivate Award – This award is earned by following up on the personal media commitment they share at the final session (Described on page 91 & 95 of the girl's MEdia book)
