MEdia series for Cadettes grades 6-8

What should I wear? What should I buy? Who can I become?

Picture
Cadette Girl Scouts are constantly bombarded with messages telling them how to look, act, and think!
In this 4-day virtual Media Journey workshop series, Girl Scout Cadettes will learn to examine the messages they see with a critical eye. Using their newfound media savvy, they will create a Take Action project that focuses on media messages that they would like to share with their community.

By the end of our Media series, each Cadette will have a well-developed plan for a Take Action Project (to be carried out after the series ends). Your Cadettes will also leave equipped with knowledge and skills that will prepare them to create strong Silver Awards.

Completing a Cadette Journey is a prerequisite  for the Silver  Award because they create a project following
the same steps, but on a smaller scale.
All Workshops4girls Journeys are lead by experienced Girl Scout Highest Award experts (Bronze, Silver & Gold) . We emphasize building the skills that lead directly to successful and impactful Silver Awards.

What do Cadettes who completed a Virtual Workshops4girls Mission MEdia Journey have to say about the experience?

I liked having the 2 gold award guest speakers, and I liked how we were taught step by step and no one was left behind when getting things done.
I really like the fact that we get to learn about the effects of media with other girls. I also loved the fact that it was very interactive and exciting.
Something that I learned while doing this journey was the difference between short and long-lasting projects. It helped me realize that if you truly want to make a difference in the community, you have to put in a lot of effort.
I would tell a friend who was interested in the journey that I had a good experience and I learned a lot.
I liked how the activities were very interactive and how we always had something to do.
I realized the responsibility of creating events and how Girl Scouts has so much more than i expected when it comes to ideas and issues.

MEdia REmake Take Action Projects

Taking Action with a purpose and a strong vision.

From elevator speech to finished Journey Take Action Project.
Hello, my name is Lauryn.
The issue I hope to address is that
people spend too much time on screens when they can be trying new activities or learning something new.

This is important to me because I love reading, and not enough people would prefer learning new things by reading or trying something they’ve never done before like baking, drawing, etc.
My take action project is creating an easily accessible website that will educate and show people new things they can try, books to read, and to learn about the impacts of too much screen time mentally and physically.
Our targeted audience is 5th-8th graders.

I hope that after my take action project is done people will spend more time trying to teach themselves new things and put down their devices for some time.

Lauryn and Kaitlyn  know when enough screen time is enough. But other kids their age don't. Learn about the impact of MEdia overuse and try new activities other than unproductive binge-watching and taking selfies to send to an endless amount of friends you barely know.

Hello, my name is Anne
The issue I hope to address is Internet Safety While Posting.
This is important to me because many people post things without thinking on social media, and it comes back to bite them. Social media can say that it’s private, but as soon as you post something, the matter is out of your hands. Nothing on social media is private.
My take action project is  a video that will showhow posting private information and/or photos can be dangerous.
My target audience is middle schoolers-high schoolers.

I hope that after my take action project is done many people will be more careful before posting things on social media.

Media Journey Take Action Project - Internet safety tips

For my Media Journey Take Action Project I wanted to teach kids to think before they post on social media, because if you post without thinking, it may come back to bite you! Social media may say it's private, but as soon as you post it, it is out of your hands. Nothing posted is private. I hope after you view this you will be more careful about posting. Thanks for watching!
Hello, my name is Shivani .
The issue I hope to address is Stereotyping in ads against women.

This is important to me because I’ve seen a lot of ads that portray an image that many women can’t relate to.
My take action project is a website that will  educate others about stereotyping of women and its effects.
(who is it for?) My target audience is Junior Girl Scouts, who I believe are at the age where they should understand this issue.
I hope that after my take action project is done girls will feel that they are not defined by the limits people claim they have, because they are more than that.

MEdia Journey Take Action Project examples

A battle between prescription drugs and home remedies, this video reveals the pros and cons of both sides, and while assuming that both may give the same results, we do consider home remedies to be a safer and more cost-effective option.
Which side are you are on?

A video or website alone isn't a Take Action Project. It is a tool to spread your message.  Taking Action is what you do with the video.
The Cadette Girl Scouts making this video were motivated by the disrespectful disagreements they were witnessing during the 2016 Presidential campaign
